I've known the Pumpkins since the early 90s, and there was tension in the band from the start, whether it was really a band or a one-man show by Billie Corgan. On stage, there was little communication between the band members. According to the press, band members accused him of drawing all the attention, and he reversed the band members for leaving him alone in the studio because they did not have enough desire to work. On stage, D'Arcy, the bassist, was particularly present. There was little to no communication between her and Billie (later interviews showed that d'Arcy suffered from stage fright). But James also hid behind his hair. And Billie was clearly the conductor. Who set the beat by waving his guitar's neck. Apart from the concerts, they also barely interacted with each other. The time I spoke to him, Billie mainly spoke in me form when talking about the band. He said that he was also able to write easy-to-hear hits, but that he preferred to be successful with the music he really wanted to make. The success is probably due to Billie's dreamy voice, combined with the mix of dreamy guitar pieces alla Pink Floyd and fierce explosive rifs and solos that you can go crazy on. The formula proved to work, because on the second real CD, Siamese Dream, they already had a number of hits, and with the third CD, Melancollie and the infinite saddness, they met the expectations of the general public and received great recognition. It was also a moment of right place at the right time, because Nirvana and Pearl Jam were just breaking mainstream with grunge, and SP, although the music isn't really Grunge, appealed to the same fans. Unfortunately, it became increasingly difficult to keep the band together. Jimmy was kicked out by Billie after the piano player died of a heroin overdose, which Jimmy also used. D'Arcy and James had also called it quits around the same time after an argument with Billie. The band was started by James and Billie, on James' initiative. They had met d'Arcy through school or a concert, and asked her to join as bass player. In the beginning, she used a drum computer. Until Jimmy Chamberlin, the drummer, joined; who didn't really seem to fit in as a type, in the sense that he seemed less shy and depressed, although he developed the biggest drug problems afterwards. As an artist, you don't want to become a caricature of yourself, of course. You want to move forward. Keep innovating. And CDs keep selling. That's why they always play a mix of old and new at concerts. And as the total repertoire to choose from increased, the number of songs from the top CDs that were played during a concert naturally decreased. I saw Billie perform about ten times in the nineties. And about three more times since then. The lyrics of the songs and the interviews already showed that Billie and the other band members are carrying a number of childhood traumas. In addition, there are all the relational problems that the band has had, drug problems, etc. And the fact that Billie secretly hopes to be able to write another CD like “Melancollie”, but that, by asking about the old songs, the audience only points out to him that his new material is not working. At yesterday's concert, you can see that the years and the things he experienced have really left a mark on Billie. And that the rest of the band is even slightly involved, partly because they have too many musicians, so there is little to do. And because they weren't there when the songs were written, so they're on stage like a session musician, and the difference in fame between Billie and the rest is too big. This created an awkward atmosphere. Effect: I also became melancholic and infinitely sad myself. I'm going to the Pumkins and Peppers to feel like I'm 18 again, but that didn't really work out yesterday. According to Billie, that time is really over. Waarschijnlijk is het succes te danken aan de dromerige stem van Billie, in combinatie met de mix van dromerige gitaar stukjes alla Pink Floyd en snoeiharde explosieve rifs en solo’s waarop je lekker uit je dak kan gaan. De formule bleek aan te slaan, want bij de tweede echte CD, Siamese Dream, hadden ze al een aantal hits, en met de derde CD, Melancollie and the infinite saddness, voldeden ze aan de verwachting van het grote publiek en kwam de grote erkenning. Het was ook een moment van right place at the right time, omdat Nirvana en Pearl Jam net met grunge mainstream doorbraken, en SP, hoewel de muziek niet echt Grunge is, dezelfde fans aanspraken. Helaas werd het steeds moeilijker de band bij elkaar te houden. Jimmy werd er door Billie uitgegooid nadat de pianospeler overleed aan een overdosis heroine, wat Jimmy ook gebruikte. Wat ook wel weer aangaf dat ook hij zijn demonen had waarmee hij de strijd aan moest gaan. Uiteindelijk was Jimmy de eerste die weer terugkwam. De Pumpkins bestonden weer, en gingen door met het maken van platen en touren, de bezetting opvullend voor de ontbrekende James en d’Arcy, met een aziatische uitziende gitarist en een vrouwelijke bassiste. Volgens Billie ging het schrijven hem nu makkelijker af. Hij had meer zelfvertrouwen en de liedjes kwamen makkelijker. Maar voor mij maakten deze liedjes ook veel minder impact. Als artiest wil je natuurlijk geen karikatuur van jezelf worden. Je wilt vooruit. Blijven vernieuwen. En CD’s blijven verkopen. Tijdens concerten spelen ze daarom altijd een mix van oud en nieuw. En met het toenemen van het totale repertoire waaruit gekozen kon worden werd het aantal liedjes van de top CD’s dat gespeeld werd tijdens een concert natuurlijk kleiner. Ik heb Billie in de negentiger jaren een keer of tien zien optreden. En sindsdien nog een keer of drie. Uit de teksten van de liedjes en de interviews bleek al dat Billie en de andere bandleden een aantal jeugtrauma’s meedragen. Daarbovenop komen alle relationele problemen die de band heeft gehad, drugsproblemen etc. En het feit dat Billie stiekem natuurlijk hoopt nog een CD als “Melancollie” te kunnen schrijven, maar dat het publiek hem door het vragen naar de oude nummers er alleen maar op wijst dat zijn nieuw materiaal niet aanslaat. Bij het concert van gisteren zie je dat de jaren en de dingen die hij heeft meegemaakt echt sporen hebben achter gelaten bij Billie. En dat de rest van de band er ook maar een beetje bij hangt. onder andere omdat ze met teveel muzikanten zijn, waardoor er weinig te doen is. En omdat ze er niet bij waren toen de nummers geschreven werden, waardoor ze als een soort sessiemuzikant op het podium staan, en het verschil in roem tussen Billie en de rest te groot is. Dit creëerde een ongemakkelijke sfeer. Effect: ik werd zelf ook melancholisch en oneindig triest. Ik ga naar de Pumkins en de Peppers om me weer even 18 te voelen, maar dat lukte gisteren niet echt. Volgens Billie is die tijd is echt voorbij. En ook volgens het publiek, dat voor het merendeel als een stelletje zandzakken met een smartphone het concert stonden op te nemen om het te kunnen share op social media.
